They were side-tracked competing with Britain and Spain.
English were competing with Spanish and French. Then English was competing with the colonists because they were breaking away, thus forming the USA. Then the USA, French, Spanish, and Mexicans were competing. (but by this time Spain was almost out..just Cuba really) Also Native Americans were competing with everyone in general.
