The mud originates from a secret location on the New Jersey side of the Delaware River. Only the company's current owner, Jim Blintiff (a descendant of Blackburne), is privy to the information. The mud is cleaned and screened, and a secret ingredient is added to it before sale. Each year, Blintiff visits the mud's secret location, and returns with 1,000 pounds of it to store over the winter, until he sells it the following Baseball season. Before all major and minor league games, an umpire rubs six or more dozen balls with the Baseball Rubbing Mud to give them a rougher surface, making them easier for pitchers to grip. The rubbing mud's unique feature is that it is "very fine, like thick chocolate pudding", and it has been considered the "perfect baseball-rubbing mud"
The bug that drops little balls of mud is the mud dauber wasp. These wasps collect mud to construct their nests, which often resemble small tubes or cells. After gathering the mud, they shape it and use it to create a protective environment for their larvae. The mud balls are typically small and can be found in various outdoor settings where these wasps are active.
There was an episode of "Dirty Jobs" on the Discover Chanel about this. It is not the umpire that does it. It is a person that works for the home team of any given game. It is a very particular type of natural mud but i do not remember where it comes from. I have heard they prepare about 60 balls per game.
It's their game balls. Also they are colourful even when covered in mud.
I don't know if it is an official rule but the umpires are always the ones that rub the balls down with the mud before the game.CORRECT ANSWER...(07/02/2011 @ 9:58 PM CDT)The answer listed above is incorrect. The balls come to the MLB already prepared with he special "mud." The company that provides them uses a very rare mud (which is obtained from an 'undisclosed' location - a well kept secret). The only thing that happens "before" the game is the home team prepares the balls by storing them in a climate controlled room, with a very specific temperature and humidity setting. The umpires themselves have no impact or involvement whatsoever in preparing the balls themselves, other than to provide the balls to the pitcher / catcher throughout the game.

To make mud balls for growing plants, mix equal parts of clay soil, compost, and water until you achieve a dough-like consistency. Form the mixture into small balls, about the size of a golf ball. Allow the mud balls to dry in the sun for a day or two before using them in your garden. Once dried, they can be buried in the soil or placed directly in plant pots to slowly release nutrients as they break down.
