yes, horses can die in a horse race but that is very very rare. They are more likely to die from colic sitting in a barn.

Mostly they die to over working their body and bones 8 out of 10 of those deaths are fillies b/c they just aren't as strong as the colts. Usually to leg injuries.

They can also die by some other common racehorse diseases such as blood filling their stomach as they run, and sometimes if a horse runs to hard (but very very rare) its heart will burst.
