In order to do this they build a machine capable of beating any human at chess, that also has the effect of speeding up any clock in it's vicinity.

This is entirely fictional. Both from the perspective of the time bending and the chess super computer. IBM's Deeper Blue wasn't able to consistently beat the reigning world chess champion Garry Kasparov until 1997
