They were two of the greatest catchers in the history of major-league baseball.
Not in the majors or minors. Berra and Spahn were teammates at the beginning of the 1965 season with the New York Mets. Berra caught two games that season, May 4 and May 9. The starting pitcher in both games was Al Jackson. Yogi did pinch hit in a game Spahn started, that being in the 8th inning on May 5. He pinch hit for catcher Chris Cannizzaro and grounded out. Jesse Gonder replaced Cannizzaro as catcher for the 9th inning. Berra was released on May 17.
Berra was hired by the Yankees as their manager after his playing career ended with the 1963 World Series. In August 1964, there was an incident on the team's bus after a loss when infielder Phil Linz played his harmonica. Berra ordered him to stop but, being seated on the other side of the bus Linz couldn't hear him and Mickey Mantle told Linz that Berra said to play louder. Linz did so and Berra slapped the harmonica out of his hands. All was forgotten and the Yankees rode a September surge to go to the World Series, but they lost to the Cardinals in seven games. Berra was fired. It was later learned that GM Ralph Houk was ready to fire Berra midseason, since he had no control over the team. Berra returned to the Yankees to manage the 1984 season, agreeing to staying for the 1985 season after being assured he wouldn't be fired. The impatient Steinbrenner did fire Berra, though, after the 16th game of the season

New York Yankee baseball legend Yogi Berra has said there were two greatest things he received from playing major league baseball. One was being the catcher in the first and only perfect World Series game by pitcher Don Larsen. The other honor was being inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
The Yankees retired the number 8 twice. It was in honor of two Yankees catchers, Bill Dickey and Yogi Berra.
Yogi Berra. The two people at home plate to congratulate Maris on #61 were Berra and the bat boy.
Yogi managed the Yankees in 1964 and from 1984-85 and the Mets from 1972-1975. After Yogi played his last game in the 1963 World Series, the Yankees hired him as their manager. However, after an incident in August involving Phil Linz playing the harmonica after a loss, Berra was fired following their loss in the 64 World Series to the Cardinals. Berra was named Yankee manager before the 1984 season. Berra agreed to stay in the job for 1985 after receiving assurances that he would not be fired, but the impatient Steinbrenner did fire Berra after the 16th game of the season. Instead of firing him personally, Steinbrenner dispatched Clyde King to deliver the news for him. This caused a rift between the two men that was not mended for almost 15 years.
