terry fox is importent because he raised over 24 million dollars for helping cancer Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and raised in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, Terry was diagnosed with bone cancer and had his right leg amputated. He wanted to raise money for all cancer patients and did this by running 42 kilometres (26miles) a day across Canada. After 143 days and 5,373 kilometres (3,339 miles) he had to stop because the cancer spread into his lungs. He died on June 28, 1981. He was 22. We still honor him today through the "Terry Fox Run" which is held across Canada and around the world every year. Close to $500 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Terry's name.
