Depending on how far away the free kick is being taken from:

1/2/3 defenders forming a wall, 10yards from the ball, covering one side of the goal.

1/2 players on the line if necessary.

The rest should be marking the attackers closely, stood in a straight horizontal line across the pitch, watching for attackers running in too! The edge of the 12 yard box makes a good guide for this.

In terms of rules of play, you need to be at least 10 yards from where the free kick is taken, and cannot get closer than this until the whistle is blown and the ball is kicked.
