A 10k is too short a distance to be taking energy gels or any other food. Energy gels are only necessary when there is a risk you run out of energy and there is enough time for the gel to become effective. This is typically only for races that are longer than 90 minutes.
I have used GU energy gel. They don't seem to do a lot. They certainly don't hurt. I would just eat a good light meal a few hours before you run 300-500 calories. Hydrate well with mostly water and a little Gatorade. Try GU if you want, don't think they help that much though. Hope this helps.
