Can your ice skates rust

Yes, they can. After Ice Skating, if the blade is not cleaned with tissues/ a towel etc. The blades can go rusty, which is very dangerous and so they must then be replaced if they do go rusty. If you your skates do get rusty, you can have them sharpened which will remove the layer of rust, however I suggest NOT to leave your skates to rust as the rust may progress to areas of the blade that aren't normally sharpened.

I have learned the hard way how to look after my boots. I had bought a brand new expensive pair of skates and after just a week they got rusty. I was told how to look after them and after that they have never had a spec of rust. These are my recommendations:

1. Wipe your blades after use. These will prevents the water to soak into the metal and therefore they will not rust.

2. DO NOT buy plastic blade shields. These are used for walking and not for storage. I would use a cloth blade protector and that will absorb all the moisture.

3. DO NOT tie laces around the skates. This will give the skates creases.

4. Get used to wiping the outside of the skates because they absorb water.

5. If your blades build up rust get them sharpened! If you are lucky enough to be aware of it quickly the rust will scrape off on the ice. However, if it gets deep into the blade then you will have to purchase a new pair.
