If by "retain" you mean "acquire," then, yes. In fact, you can gain any extra Chess piece by getting a pon safely across the board. Some people think you can only use this action to gain a queen, but in fact, any piece can be acquired by getting your pon to your opponent's side of the board. However, in some games, you cannot change your pon to a rook even if it is across the board if both your rooks are still active and have not been killed.
