Teams do not have mascots (if they like can choose their talisman-symbol of luck). Mascots are used in big events like World Cup football , Commonwealth games,ICC world cup cricket. Mascots are used generally for two purposes: a. to give some fame to the event b. simply commercial to have more money. ICC World Cup Cricket 2011 (# countries are hosts): chose Stumpy the elephant is the mascot

it is certain for now that after the attacks on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore, Pakistan wont to be safe. So ICC has decided to give Sri Lanka, India and Bangladesh the honors to host 2011 world cup.

A pelican? You need to give more details. There are loads of birds in the world
The elephant "Stumpy" was used for the ICC 2011 Cricket World Cup as a mascot and icon. The elephant itself is an icon of India (where the majority of games were played), as there are only two varieties of elephant in the world (Indian and African). The characterisation of an elephant as a mascot would have also lent the name Stumpy to be used fittingly, as a reference to both cricket and the animal.Ratnakaar Shetty, the tournament director quoted the following about Stumpy:"It also emphasises the enthusiasm of youth both in general and for Cricket itself, especially on the sub-continent with its massive and dedicated following. He's stylised to give an instantly recognisable graphic strength so that with exposure his bold lines and strong colouring will instantly create a friendly face for the CWC,"
As per the history of Cricket World Cup, the Man of the Series award was first instigated in the year 1992, during the fifth edition of this quadrennial event. Before that, Man of the Match award in the final was considered to be extremely prestigious.Reference: http://www.travour.com/icc-cricket-world-cup-2007-west-indies/man-of-the-series.html
Appeal
Its depend on your interest ...
I'm a Pakistan cricket fan because they bring a lot of energy to the game with their naturally talented fast bowlers and all rounders, they do few drawbacks like poor batting and unpredictability but they give a lot to their fans around the world. Basically, without Pakistan in cricket the whole game would be boring!
Probably you are asking about India's first 20-20 cricket match. It was on 1st December 2006 against South Africa at Wanderers stadium in Johannesburg
