i have never heard of a jockey licence.
There are some that just don't hear about the ins and outs of the racing world, but while you may haven't ever heard of a jockey license before, I can assure you that every jockey riding recognized races must be licensed prior to riding in any races where there is parimutuel betting. There's a few rules that get broken from time to time,... a jockey riding a race without a license is never one of them. Not in any state I've ever raced in, and have never heard tell of anyone racing without their license. Not just anyone who applies for a jockey's license is granted their license either. You need to get the outrider, the starter, and the Stewards to okay you before you're licensed with an Apprentice License.
Steve Cauthen was 16 when he was licensed, if memory serves. It's not so much the age, as it is talent, knowledge and abilities of the applicant. Steve Cauthen, had more talent, and raw ability than many jocks twice his age. Being a jockey isn't just a job, it's more a way of life.
