There are a number of different tee markers because each one indicates which group should tee off from where, and for what purpose. Examples * Competition tees * General play tees * Ladies tees * Senior tees * Juniour tees
He can if he wants to, but he could be the butt of many jokes! If it is general play, he can tee off from wherever he wants to, but if it is an official competition he has to tee off from the stipulated tee box. If he doesn't feel he hits the ball far enough he could simply hit off the forward tees, but if he really wants to hit off the ladies tees nothing can stop him.
During a Pro Am there are two sets of tees. Ones which the pros play off, these would be the tournament tees. The other set is the Amateur tees, from which the amateurs play off, these are usually quite far forward as much as 150 yards in front of the pro tees!
If you are a man, simply play off the easiest men's tees. This will not only build up your confidence, but it will also not be too challenging for you, and hopefully your scores will come down. Then advance to the more difficult mens' tees and then maybe even the medal tees. If you are a woman just play off the easiest women's tees, but at my club there only one set of tees for ladies.
The player who tees of first in a general competition is the player who has the lowest exact handicap. In more official tournaments the order is determined by tournament organisers. If a player is only hitting an iron off the tee and cannot reach the group in front they can go.
It is called the tee box. The ladies tee off from a line somewhere forward of the men's line. You are allowed to go two club lengths back from a line drawn from one marker to the other inside of the tee box. There are normally four different tee boxes in golf, White and Blue usually being Mens tees, and Red and Yellow normally ladies or seniors tees.
There would be a bucket of wet sand at the tee. The player would take a small amount, build it into a little volcano, and hit off of that.
