Any martial art can be studied without sparring. It is the decision of each school to determine what they teach. My style does not 'play.' Sparring is something done once someone is a black belt.

Sparring is sparring. I do Zen9 Martial Arts Australia. I am a black belt in that and Zen Chi Ryu. I've been doing Mixed Martial Arts for 7 years now and as far as I know it is the same. A controlled practice fight where you show off your technique and moves for judges or for practice.
