Richard Petty is known for his strong work ethic, determination, and competitive spirit, which contributed to his success as a NASCAR driver. He is also characterized by his humility and approachability, often engaging with fans and fellow racers alike. Additionally, Petty's loyalty to his team and the sport, along with his sportsmanship, have made him a respected figure in racing history. His charismatic personality and dedication to promoting the sport further solidify his legacy.
In the book, Conversations with Tom Petty, Tom says that he really liked "I Won't Back Down" but when it turned into a big anthem thing, that kind of soured him on it. This is obviously not a quote from the book, because I'm too lazy to go throught it, but he did say something to that effect, even if in slightly different words.
In his song "I won't back down" he says "You can stand me up at the gates of Hell, but I won't back down" means that he is not a believer and that you can threaten him with Hell for not being a believer but "he won't back down" on his position. In the song he continues: "Well I know what's right, I got just one life", which obviously means that he doesn't believe humans have any life beyond life on earth. He doesn't believe in life after death. As with most super talented/intelligent humans, he gets it.
