Helmets are never not necessary whilst riding a horse. However not all people do, I would DEFINITELY recommended them. Even the calmest horse can spook and if the horse throws you... well, you'll want to be wearing a helmet. Also, generally all riding schools require the student to be wearing a helmet, so if you plan on taking lessons a helmet would most likely be a requirement.

Also, if you did get thrown from a horse whilst not wearing a helmet, there is a good possibility that you could be killed.

ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree there but if you are stupid enough to ride without a helmet then you must be over the age of 18. Not that I recommend it. I ALWAYS ride with a helmet so should everyone else.

I am a hypocrite on this issue. I have ridden for 40 years and have NEVER worn a helmet. I do not EVER allow my kids to ride without one.

It is obligatory in some places and it is a good preventive measure, however it is not obligatory in general

you dont HAVE to but its recamended

you should all s0o where some thing like jeans and i long sheved t

also... If you go to a competition or a show then you HAVE to wear one or you will get in trouble (like at Pony Club)

The Vic Roads rules say that if you are over the age of 18 you don't have to wear a helmet any younger it is compulsery.

It probably depend on where you ride and what discipline/ style of riding you do. Where I live and ride, most people who ride English wear helmets. I'm not sure that they are made to wear them, but given the fact that certain English disciplines, like jumping, seem to involve more risk, people seem to choose to do so. I ride both English and Western. Currently, I do a lot more Western. Although most of the people I ride with don't wear helmets, I still wear my English helmet. I get some jabs, but, honestly, I fail to see how the trails are any less hazardous than the ring. As far as I know, unless you're somewhere where it's a liability issue, you don't have to wear a helmet, but its always a good idea to do so regardless.

It is important to wear an approved riding helmet while riding a horse because serious injuries to the neck, head, and spine while horseback riding, especially the more fast-paced disciplines such as foxhunting and a special discipline known as the jumpers. Several cases have been documented where people have been seriously injured, been parylyzed, or even killed by falling off a horse head-first without proper headware. Perhaps you have heard of the man who played Superman, I don't really remember his name, but fell off his horse, a supremely talented thoroughbred gelding and broke his neck, killing him several years later.

There are many reason people do not wear helmets, Some people don't like the feel of them, others don't think they look good, some others think they are for wimps etc. Some think they won't get hurt or don't care if they do. They are all bad reasons to not wear a helmet, but perhaps one of the worst is that many riders, particularly western riders won't wear helmets because they don't match their show clothes. Again they are all bad reasons not to wear a helmet that can save your life.

Why wear a riding hat while jumping?

A riding helmet is worn while jumping for the same reason a football player wears a helmet...to protect the riders head in case of a fall. Helmets are ASTM certified as protective equipment in case the rider falls and strikes their head on the ground or a jump or the horses hoof strikes the riders head.

Do you need a license to give horse riding lessons?

It is not necessary, but it will bring more costumers to you, if they know you are certified. Be aware that if something happens to a student, young or old while your horses is around or while the student is riding it, you are liable, so you should at least have liability insurance.
