Yes, they are. Football in England is what we call soccer there, and Rugby is a British way of what we call football. Now, both rugby and football are very different things.

There are two different types of rugby, rugby league and rugby union.

League is played with 13 players per team. Like American Football it plays til the ball carrier is brought down in a tackle, like downs. The attacking team has to score before the sixth tackle, after each tackle, the game restarts with a knock back similar to a scrimmage, if the ball carrier is tackled sixth time possession of the ball passes to the other side. This tends to be a running game with few kicks.

Union is played with 15 a side, there is no limit to the number of tackles and the games doesn't stop at a tackle but continues on the ground in a ruck or a maul. A ruck the players are on the ground, a maul the players are on their feet. This leads to more of a mixed game of kicking the ball and running with it.

Neither version of the game allows the ball to be thrown forward, and there are no individual squads for attack or defense, the starting 15 play every part of the game.
