freestyle- fastest stroke and the one taught first however the breathing can be difficult to master when first learning it as you want to breath to the front, also you need a good leg kick to keep your body upright.
butterfly- second fastest, one of the hardest and usually taught last. you need a good rhythm and strength to pull yourself out of the water- that's why younger children ind it hard.
backstroke- third fastest, one of the first taught, quite easy to swim slowly as long as you have a fast kick and keep your head back. If you swim it faster then you need to bend your arm at 90 degrees under the water to get a good pull which is quite hard and many professionals wear a nose plug to stop water going up their nose.
breaststroke- slowest- and again one of the hardest to learn as there is quite a lot of components- taught before fly- there is a lot of resistance if swimming fast and you need to aquire a motion slightly like butterfly to be succesful. If you are swimming slow it is easy- e.g granny breastroke.
