The Polo Grounds, was the home to both the New York Giants and New York Yankees for several years, was operated from 1889 to 1963. It was located in an area of Coogan's Hollow, part of a farm and later, part of the Coogan Estate owned by James J. Coogan. It was located near the corner of Eighth Avenue and 155th Street just north of Central Park. The Yankees and Giants shared the stadium from 1913 to 1922 when the Yankees built their own stadium a few miles away in the Bronx section of New York City. After the Giants move to San Francisco, the expansion New York Mets played at the Polo Grounds until Shea Stadium was built in 1964. After the Mets moved to their new stadium, the city's Board of Estimates voted to level the stadium to make way for 1,700 low-cost housing units.
