Pool, sometimes called billiards, evolved from outdoor lawn games in the 15th century. King Louis XI of France had the first recorded indoor billiards table. This game evolved into a variety of games such as pool, snooker, and English billiards.

Billiards began in very early 1400's. Two major changes occurred to the game from 1800 to 1835 resulting in pocket billiards, or pool, as we know it today. This includes the use of leather tips and cushions added to the rails.

The game of pool is an evolution of the original table game of billiards that began in both Italy and France in the very early 1400's. In the 1700's, the game consisted of holes, pockets, and obstacles. This became more standardized by 1800 to use a table with 6 pockets, followed by the change of the rails to include cushions. By 1835, the game of pocket billiards, or pool, had reached the level very similar to that played today.

Its origin is not known for certain but it is generally agreed around the 1500s.

* Added - The origin of billiards was trucco, a Italian lawn game that used balls and cues to move the balls. This was moved indoors at some time in the 1600 or 1700's, but trucco was played until the mid-1900's. The first records of play on a table indoors is from the mid-1700's. The Italians called it billiardo. By 1835, billiards started to become a major pasttime and equipment began developing to be essentially idenitcal to what is used today.
