Jump shots crush the felt and it doesn't fully recover, with each jump shot decreasing the lifespan slightly. And trick shots can destroy the felt in a matter of a single session. But under normal play, the chalk residue, which is essentially sandpaper, is responsible for most wear, and is simply a matter of the number of shots made. Keep the table covered when not in use, keep it clean, and it will last a very long time.
