The first Yankee player to wear the number 1 was Earle Combs in 1929.

The Yankees were the first team to put numbers on the players' jerseys. The numbers were based on where the player batted in the lineup. Thus, Combs, the leadoff hitter wore number 1, Babe Ruth, who hit third, wore number 3, Lou Gehrig, who hit fourth, wore number 4 and so on.
