Well, I wouldn't look too hard in the Super Rules competitions [retired players leagues - some players go beyond 60 even 70 in the Ultra leagues].

You would think that if they were genuine in their love of the game, you would find quite a few there, as the competitions cater for Over 35; but it's not like the tennis - where you do find a number of big names.

In the Victorian competitions, according to officials at the Essendon Super Rules Club - one of the very top-performing clubs at these levels, they are extremely rare. I am aware of Tony Liberatore, with few other former top flite players ... and I think Dermott Brereton's name might have been mentioned.

Big Bob Johnson, of Melbourne's heydays, ran a butcher shop; he is now dearly departed to the Big Sky. John Greening, former Collingwood star, is living on Gold Coast and still dabbles as a 'bookie'. Butch Gale, former Fitzroy Lions, owned a hotel, I believe. I spoke to Bob Skilton quite some years back managing one of these large packaging companies, and to Stuart Spencer, former 50's Melbourne Great, also now managing director of a removalist and packaging company in Tasmania. I also engaged the late Don Cordner some 20 years back - a former doctor. St Kilda's sole Premiership captain, Darrell Baldock, became a parliamentarian in home state of Tasmania; and David Parkin, Hawthorn and Carlton, and Ross Smith, St. Kilda, now both retired, became university Phys Ed lecturers. Former 1970's St Kilda Reserves player, Paul Skaftouros, now captains a snooker club, fishes daily and runs a catering business in Frankston area, besides regularly visiting former 60's Essendon Great, Bluey Shelton, on his farm in country Victoria.

Other Greats, such as Tim Watson, Gary Lyon, Sam Newman, and Denis Cometti now are television sports' personalities.
