October 15, 1989 Los Angeles Kings vs. Edmonton Oilers.
How fitting that Wayne Gretzky would break Gordie Howe's scoring record in front of the very fans that saw him begin his NHL career. Gretzky played in Edmonton for nine years and brought that team 4 Stanley Cups.
Gretzky entered the game with 1,849 points just one point shy of the record and two back of history. Gretzky scored an assist five minutes into the first period to tie the record. The fans waited with anticipation throughout the remainder of the game as they were rewarded with just 61 seconds left in regulation when Gretzky came from behind the net and placed a backhander over the shoulder of Bill Ranford and under the crossbar to tie the game at 4 to 4. What took Gordie Howe twenty-five years and 1767 games to do, Gretzky did in just a little over ten years (this game was at the beginning of his eleventh NHL year) and in just 780 games.
October 15th 1989 in Edmonton Gretzky got two points in An LA overtime victory to pass Gordie Howes record for all time regular season points which had stood at 1850. Gordie played 26 NHL seasons to set the record. Gretzky at age 28 had played ten years when he broke it.
Wayne Gretzky passed Gordie Howes as NHL's all time top scorer.
