October 15, 1989 Los Angeles Kings vs. Edmonton Oilers.

How fitting that Wayne Gretzky would break Gordie Howe's scoring record in front of the very fans that saw him begin his NHL career. Gretzky played in Edmonton for nine years and brought that team 4 Stanley Cups.

Gretzky entered the game with 1,849 points just one point shy of the record and two back of history. Gretzky scored an assist five minutes into the first period to tie the record. The fans waited with anticipation throughout the remainder of the game as they were rewarded with just 61 seconds left in regulation when Gretzky came from behind the net and placed a backhander over the shoulder of Bill Ranford and under the crossbar to tie the game at 4 to 4. What took Gordie Howe twenty-five years and 1767 games to do, Gretzky did in just a little over ten years (this game was at the beginning of his eleventh NHL year) and in just 780 games.
