The record for the most regular season games won by a team in a single season is 116, shared by the Chicago Cubs and the Seattle Mariners. The 1906 Chicago Cubs have the best winning percentage of all time, with a 116-36 record for a percentage of .763. Since the 162-game season was adopted by both Leagues in 1962, the 2001 Seattle Mariners have the best record, with a 116-46 season for a .716 percentage. The 1998 New York Yankees hold the record for the team with the most regular game wins in a season in which they also won the World Series, with a 114-48 record for a .704 percentage. The Yankees swept the World Series in four games, defeating the San Diego Padres. wrong the amazing mets in 1969 won 124 straight games only to lose the 125th games

4 teams have been in first place alone or tied for first place for the entire season and gone on to win the World Series.

Prior to the start of divisional play in 1969, the 1927 New York Yankees led the American League for the entire season and won the World Series. After divisional play started, the 1984 Detroit Tigers (AL East), 1990 Cincinnati Reds (NL West), and the 2005 Chicago White Sox (AL Central) led their divisions for the entire season and went on to win the World Series.

The 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers won their first two games of the season but were considered to be in second place because the Cubs, who started their season two days earlier than the Dodgers, had won their first three games. The Dodgers won their third game and the Cubs lost their fourth game putting the Dodgers in first place where they stayed for the remainder of the season. The Dodgers then defeated the Yankees in the World Series.
