Does the NHL need more black players?

As with many other people around the world, few people have the opportunity, ambition, or finances, to play the sport. Many schools don't have good tennis programs, and some families can't afford private lessons. The ascent of players such as the Williams sisters (who grew up in the poor section of Compton, California, and were taught tennis by their father), French player Gael Monfils, and others, proves that tennis is a multi-cultural sport.

Hockey is most popular in Canada, northern Europe, Russia and parts of the United States. Looking at the racial breakdown of those countries, you will find a smaller percentage of African Americans.

Hockey is also a very expensive sport to play, with the rising costs of equipment and ice time making the game inaccessible to many youths. Again, taking a look at any wealth report (especially in the US), you will find a significantly higher number of wealthy whites then you will blacks, thus preventing them from playing an expensive sport, such as hockey.

A good many play in the league today... In the past there was Anson Carter, Fred Brathweight. Today we have George Laraque, Jamal Mayers, Mike Greir, Kevin Weeks, Donald Brashear.
