Best Answer

The minimum is 90 minutes with two 45 minute halves. The referee will often add extra time at the end of half one and the end of the games because of substitutions and injuries that can usually be around 2-5 minutes each.

"Regulation time" is the standard game duration -- two 45-minute halves for standard adult play -- plus any "stoppage time" (the clock runs continuously during each half, but the referee keeps track of any stoppage of play (ball out of bounds, injuries, etc). At the end of the second half, the referee extends game play to allow for "stoppage time")

In standard play, games may end in a tie. But in cases where a game cannot end in a draw (elimination tournaments), a tied game is extended for two 15-minute periods, called "extra time".

If a game is still tied at the end of extra time, it goes to a "penalty shootout" (heads-up match of one kicker vs the goalkeeper). The teams take turns shooting from the penalty mark, for a total of five shots each. If the game is still tied after five shots each, it goes to "sudden death". The teams continue to take turns shooting, but the first to score wins.

In soccer what is additional time?

Additional time in soccer is stoppage time that delayed the game. This time is added on to the 90 minute regulation time. After the 90 minutes regulation the referee decides how much time to add. Once that limit has been reached the whistle blows and the game is over. Only the referee can add time to a game as they are the sole time keeper for each match.
