The first paintballs were made by the Nelson Paint Company in the 1950s. They intentionally made it for marking trees and cows. Paintball started, for fun, in the 70's whentwo guys shot each other in the woods, but the first gun was also made by the Nelson Paint company in 1976 when they thought of a game to stalk and hunt each other for fun. The reason for this was because Hayes Noel, a stock trader and his friend Charles Gaines were talking about Gaines' trip from Africa, and how he hunted buffalo. Gaines' wanted to recreate the thrill of hunting buffalo by making a game of survival. For their first game they used very small, 12oz, co2 bottle and the only gun available were the Nelspot 007pistols. No mask had yet to be created so they used safety glasses and the paintballs then weren't biodegradable like ours, they were oil based, AND the guns had to be recocked after every shot. :( They invited a writer from Sports Illustrated to watch and write an article about one of their games. It appeared in an issue of Sports Illustrated in the 1980's and it was named "survival". It was a hit and they made and sold equipment to the public. They made a huge profit and in 6 months they were rich. From then on it was deemed a sport!! yay :)
