Points determine the ranking of a team on the table. After every ODI match, the two teams involved receive points based on a mathematical formula. The total of each team's points total is divided by the total number of matches to give a rating, and all teams are ranked on a table in order of rating. When a lower rated team defeats a higher ranked team it recives more points and vice-versa.

When a batsman hits a ball that lands on or outside of the boundary rope, he and his team receive 6 runs. If the ball lands in the field then touches or goes outside of the boundary rope, the batsman and his team receive 4 runs. If "no ball" or "wide" is ruled against a bowler's delivery, or if byes of leg byes are given, the teams score increases by one run (however, no batsman is credited). For technical violations (such as a ball striking a helmet left on the field by a fielding team), 5 penalty runs may be credited to the batting OR Bowling team (depending on who committed the violation). Apart from these, the most common way to score in cricket is to, after the ball has been delivered, hit by the batsman or not, run from the batsman's popping crease and touch his bat on or inside the non-striker's popping crease. This can be done numerous times a ball, with 2 and 3 run balls common in cricket.

The standard score in cricket is the Run.

In cricket, a run is typically scored when the two batsmen successfully run down the pitch and "make their ground" beyond the far popping crease. Both batsmen must complete this maneuver for the run to count otherwise will be disallowed as a "short run" Batsmen may make as many runs as they feel they can safely do without running the risk of being "run out" while outside their ground. Credit for the runs goes to whoever was "on strike" (hitting the ball) at that point.

In addition to the standard run, runs may be awarded for several other reasons:

  • If a batsman hits the ball to the boundary, he scores four runs without needing to run. If he hits over the boundary on the full, it is six runs instead.
  • If a bowler makes an improper (no ball) or unreachable (wide) delivery, the umpire will force the bowler to deliver again and award one run to the batting team as a penalty.
  • Certain violations of the rules call for the umpire to award penalty runs (typically five) to the offended team. This can happen, for example, if a hit ball hits a loose piece of equipment (such as a helmet) on the field.

Cricket scoring is a rather complicated, balanced scorecard. Many runs can be scored in one at bat (or bowl, as it's called) in a cricket game. When runners cross paths a run is scored.
