After every quarter of play, teams switch sides. In overtime, the loser of the coin toss can pick which side to defend.

There is some strategy to picking a side during the coin toss. Depending on which direction the wind is blowing, you may pick the side that puts the wind at your back in the 4th quarter. This helps if you are behind and need to pass or kick field goals to win the game.

The team who doesn't get the ball at the coin flip decides which endzone they want. A team will have the same endzone in the first and fourth quarters and the opposite endzone in the 2nd and third quarters.

Teams change sides after the first quarter and the third quarter. They might change at the half, but that depends upon which goal the kicking team elects to defend.

In a regular game that doesn't go into overtime, each team switches sides three times, at the conclusion of the 1st quarter, halftime, and at the end of the third quarter.
