What states is Cheyenne the capital?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Cheyenne was the capital of the Wyoming Territory and, since it was the only city in the state of Wyoming of any substance, it remained as the capital of the state of Wyoming.

The location of Cheyenne is in the lower south east corner of the state, only minutes from the Colorado border. The significance of the location has to do with it being a stop on the Oregon and Mormon trail. It is also located close to water and eventually became a major stop for the Union Pacific railroad. It lead straight into Salt Lake, Utah or north to Oregon via South Pass Wyoming. As in most major cities that eventually became the capital, it started out as a stop for settlers within Indian country looking for shelter, food or trade.
