How much grass does a horse eat a day?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

depends on if your horse is a stalled horse or a pasture horse. pasture horses normally founder easliy. and stalled horses don't founder so easliy so it depends.

Answer:Actually, horses do not founder becasue of pasture, as you can see in the related link. A horse should be kept in "natural boarding" 24/7, and they will constantly eat to keep their small bellies filled for about 18-20 hours a day, and this will total to about 2% of their body weight. Given free choice grass or grass hay, a horse will eat the correct amount; some how they just know what they need.

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It is limited to three year old thoroughbreds only. No Belgians or mustangs need apply. Geriatric Gypsy Horses go away, Premature ponies will be escorted out. All size challenged animals like Hanoverian's may leave their applications in the circular file cabinet next to the watercooler.

They are bred to run. Someone said that the Thoroughbred has been bred and inbred with a locomotive for a heart and champange glass stems for legs. Perhaps some form of Genetic discipline or engineering will be required.

United States

In the United States, thoroughbred racehorses have a number tattooed inside their upper lip. The tattoo should be one letter followed by five numbers. Thoroughbreds older than 25 years old only have four numbers. You can research the tattoo number on the Jockey Club Registry website to get information about the horse's breeding and race record.

Some thoroughbreds also have microchip implants with identifying information, but you need to contact a veterinarian with a special chip reader to get the information. Microchips aren't required for registration in the US.

If you meant to ask how you can find a retired racehorse to buy, adopt or foster, there are several charitable organizations that place old racehorses in new homes for a small fee. You can get more information through The Jockey Club (the official breed registry), the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation and special charitable organizations that maintain websites dedicated to finding new homes for old racehorses.

CANTER is a non-profit that rescues ex race horses and adopts them out.
