How did the Philadelphia Phillies get their name?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The Flyers got their name through a contest. Bill Putnam announced there would be a contest to decide the name of the Philadelphia hockey team, and many attempted to win the contest.

It was the sister of Ed Snider (who owns the Philadelphia Flyers) that suggested the name Flyers, and Ed Snider saw it as a winning name. Over 100 entries were labeled as "Flyers" and a drawing was held to determine which one would be the winner.

It was Alec Stockard, at that time a 9-year-old boy, who won the drawing, although he did misspell the name and wrote "Fliers."

How Philadelphia got its name?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

In 2007 Philadelphia, specifically West and North Philadelphia (respectively, West of the Schuylkilll River/U. Penn Campus, and North of Girard Avenue), earned the nickname 'Killadelphia' from averaging over 1 murder and 4 shootings per day.

The derivation, 'Killadelph' is a combination of 'Killadelphia' and the nickname 'Illadelph' popularized by native Hip-Hop group, The Roots; from the title of their third album 'Illadelph Halflife'.

Why is there no first street in Philadelphia?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The street that would be called first street is called front street because back in the 16 and 1700's the first street starting from the east (next to the Delaware River) was really on the river's front. Nowadays as the city has spread and Front street continued to go directly north, it no longer hugs the river. Also there is no 14th street. It's named Broad street.
