How is barley malted?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Barley is malted by soaking it in water to make it sprout. After that, it is dried to stop the sprouting process. It helps in turning starches in barley into sugars. The malted barley is then cleaned and prepared to be used for making things like beer. This method is essential because it creates the sugars needed for fermentation in brewing.

What is the highest alcohol content?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The highest alcohol content physically possible is 100% abv (alcohol by volume) although this is not suitable for human consumption. The highest alcohol content for a distilled beverage is around 190 proof or 95% abv for grain spirits such as Everclear or Gem Clear. These highly flammable beverages are most often mixed with non-alcoholic drinks such as fruit juices, or in a large communal punch bowl as in "jungle juice." As most liquor is between 40 and 50% abv, the ingestion of such spirits often causes extreme intoxication.

Do you have any idea where you can get beer seeds?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

After much research, I have come to the conclusion that California Beer Seeds were actually "Water Kefir Grains"! Water kefir grains grow in a mixture of sugar and water, and create a slightly lemony beverage with some fizz and a touch of natural alcohol. Hence, BEER (sorta)! Plus it is a natural probiotic beer, to boot! How fun is that! You just need the "seed", sugar, water and a couple of jars, and you get all kinds of fun! Plus the kids enjoy watching the grains kinda bounce up and down, and multiply! Very awesome, I think!

Just Google that phrase, and you will find plenty of places to get it. Amazon carries "water kefir grains" if you shop on there. If you want to see what it looks like, I just googled it with "pic" behind the phrase. It looks a little earthy, but I bet it isn't half bad when its strained! I am thinkin of giving it a try myself!

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Wine and beer production converts sugar to alcohol without distilling. However, the yeast that performs this process will die off at high alcohol levels, the reason it is difficult to produce any beer or wine with more than a 20% alcohol content. Nearly all alcohol product that has a higher percentage is distilled, but there are exceptions using special processes to get close to 30%.

Is homebrewing cheaper than buying good beer?

User Avatar

Asked by Ike

Let's say a beer kit sets you back 30 bucks. From a local merchant, that's a good average. And let's say you produce five gallons of finished beer from it. That's about nine six-packs. So, that's about $3.33 a six-pack. What does a six-pack of Samuel Adams Boston Lager or Sierra Nevada Pale Ale cost? Easily double that. More esoteric craft brews will cost even more! Now, I am only talking about RECURRING costs. The non-recurring costs associated with buying the gear you'll need are not factored in. But they are, for the most part, one-time expenses, so the cost of those items will be spread out over the amount of beer you brew. So brew a lot!
