What is the difference between a Harley flstn and a Harley flstni?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

When Softails were made both carbureted and fuel injected, the "I" at the end designated EFI. When all Harleys became fuel injected the "I" was dropped, since there was no longer a need for differentiation.

FLSTN is the letter designation for both the Heritage Nostalgia and the Softail Deluxe.

How do you tighten the handlebars on a 2001 road king?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Unscrew the old ones at the headstock and put the new ones on where the old ones went and screw them in at the right spot (where you whant them) and do them up tight.

not so easy. first the head light has to come out, the a 5/16 nut inside the head light housing holding on the trim piece that need to come off. one that's off the plastic trim piece on ignition need to be pried off gently, then remove the 2 screws and that cover will come off giving you access to the handle bar mounts

How do you change an oil filter in a heritage classic?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I have a 97 heritage and it should be exactly the same procedure to change the tranny fluid. there is a drain plug on the carberater side of the tranny, there are several alan head screws the plug is the one that is flush with the tranny casing, my softail holds about 28 ounces of fluid, there is a large alan head plug on top of the tranny almost directly above the drain plug, this plug is where you add your tranny fluid and the plug should also have the dipstick attatched to the plug, check your owners manual for the correct amount of fluid , if you dont have one google it or add 24 ounces to start and keep adding until you have the right level on the dipstick, this should be done with the scooter upright and level and the scooter should be at operating temperature to get an accurate reading. I hope this helps you, it is an extremely easy procedure to do. by the way the fluid only needs to be changed every 50,000 miles but if your as anal as i am i do it every 10,000 miles it cant hurt and is very inexpensive to do. Do yourself a favor and replace the rubber o-ring on the dipstick to avoid any fluid leaks.

How do you change and check the primary oil on a 1999 harley-davidson heritage?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Make sure bike is straight up, not on side stand. Remove drain plug at the bottom of the primary directly under the clutch assembly. This uses a torx bit (star wrench). Once oil is drained, preferably into a container, replace plug and remove clutch cover (big round cover). Using a funnel, refill primary through this opening with the proper amount of a quality V Twin primary chain lube. Fill to bottom of clutch diaphragm spring or bottom of opening. This will be approximately 1 quart, give or take an oz. Replace the clutch cover.

How do you remove the gas tank on a 2008 XL Sportster?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I had to repair my gas tank on my 1988 Ranger XLT. I've only done this once and I had a Uncle assist me. I'm not a professional or certified mechanic I just try to fix my own vechicle. Hope I can be of any help to you. Now, my gas tank was punctured and was savageable; therefore, my tank was emptied. There was no need for me to empty my tank. You'll probably have to empty the tank before removing it. I replaced my tank when it was fixed. I don't know if you are going to put a new one or replace it. Remember, you are dealing with fuel so no smoking. Careful with anything that could ignite your fuel. Try to do this outside instead of inside the garage. I started by disconnecting my battery. Underneath the rear driver side you'll see the gas tank. It's held in place by 2 metal straps(clamps). You'll have to remove them in order to bring the tank down. This portion was sort of annoying. If I can remember, the bolts are very long and not much space to work with. Once you take the clamps off the tank should come down easily. You have to becareful with the fuel lines which are still attached to the tank. On my tank the lines are in bedded in a circular gadget, which will come off by twisting it off. Can not remember if you twist left or right, try either way. Once that's off your tank should be free. Be careful with your fuel lines, that will be another project you'll probably don't care to do. Now this was my experience on my ranger. And to replace it just follow your steps backwards. Once you have everything tighten. Put some fuel in the tank and replace battery wires. It should start. Make sure you have fuel in the tank before cranking it. Hope to be of assistance to you.

How do you change a clutch cable on a Harley Davidson?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

With the installation of new cables, there should be no need to adjust the clutch itself if the clutch was OK before hand. You need the 1/8 to 1/16 at the handle after you are done which is gotten by the adjustment in the cable itself. Really easy to do.

Drain the trans fluid first so it doesn't get messy. The cable change requires removal of the trans side cover (6- 1/4 " bolts) If you cut the short end of the Allen wrench down just long enough to seat in the bolt head, you can remove the trans end cover without removing the exhaust by breaking them loose and threading them out by hand. Leave them in the cover and just lift the cover off and up over the exhaust. You can then see the cable end and how it attaches inside the cover. You may be able to unhook it from the ball ramp if you disconnect the upper end first from the handle with the extra slack in the cable. To do this you remove the "c" clip on the underside of the handle perch that holds the pivot pin for the handle in , remove the pivot pin and slide the handle out of the perch after you give it all the slack in the cable adjuster. You'll see the slot in the perch where you slip the cable through to remove the cable from the handle. Replace the clutch cable with the replacement fastenings and routing it the same way as it was previously and grease up the handle pivot pin when reinstalling. Screw the cable end with the "O" ring on it back into the trans end cover like the old one was. Replace the trans fluid after you get it buttoned up and adjust the cable free play as stated above. You can usually get away with reusing the trans cover gasket if the bike is fairly new and hasn't been apart before. It may be a good idea to lube the new cable when you install it being it is all apart now.

I think this covers it but a factory manual would be a great investment if you don't have one.

How do you adjust rear shocks on a 2007 Harley Davidson Street Bob?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The Road King shocks are air adjustable via an air valve located on the right side of the bike just above the rear tire.

Your Harley Davidson owner's manual will tell you what the shocks should be pressurized to depending upon the load on your bike (for instance - if you'll be carrying a passenger - the pressure should be a bit higher than it would be if you were riding solo).

Don't even attempt to read the pressure unless you have the specialized "hand pump" that is used to pressurize the shocks. You can purchase this from Harley Davidson or via a third party online.

The valve is a typical bicycle / auto air valve - but ... DO NOT attempt to pressurize it with anything but the specialized hand pump. Using anything else will risk over pressurization of your shocks and that's not good. The shocks hold a very small volume of air at relatively low pressure levels - so the hand pump is a must have.

How do you check the charging system on a 1995 Harley Davidson FLHT?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

the very first thing you do is check your battery voltage. should be at least 12.7v (DC) or more. if not, charge your battery. after battery is charged, verify the voltage by hitting the start switch to turn engine over, dont start it, just take the excess charge off the battery. should be 12.7v or better afterwards. if not, take it to auto zone and have it tested for free.

using a digital multimeter, set on volts ac (very important volts AC), fire the bike up, remove the leads from the stator (front of engine - bottom right side - front of primary) there will be two holes to put your DMM leads (doesnt matter which way) the output should be 16v (AC) - 20v (AC) for each 1000 rpms. ifyou rev the engine to 2000 rpms, it should read 32v - 40v. 3000 rpms - 48v - 60v etc.

if not, bad stator. do yourself a favor and replace the stator and rotor

to check voltage regulator, (after stator output has been verified) reconnect stator output leads, very important --- CHANGE setting on DMM to volts DC --- , place positive lead from dmm on positive battery terminal, now negative on negative terminal, with the bike running voltage should read between 13v (dc) - 15v (dc).if not, rev the engine a little to see if it goes up.

if <13 or >15, probably a bad voltage regulator.

those are the only three components in the charging system.

battery --- about $90,

regulator -- little over $100,

stator and rotor -- over $300,

riding your harley, knowing you fixed it yourself --- priceless,

(provided you did it correctly, and torqued all your nuts and bolts, otherwise.... hospitals are expensive)

BUY THE SERVICE MANUAL --- NO, YOU HAVE THE OWNERS MANUAL!! there is a HUGE difference. you'll see. its worth its weight in gold. especially at an $88 an hour labor rate. Good Luck, D sorry man, the stator output leads are on the LEFT side of the engine, in front of the primary.

my bad,

D

How do you change the transmission oil on a 2000 Harley Sportster?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The oil and transmission are the same on a sportster,a 90 degree bent rubber tube under the bike with a clamp.thats the oil plug.

The answer above is wrong the rubber hose only drains the engine oil, there is a threaded plug on the bottom of the primary. Refill the transmission thru the primary chain inspection plate (center-left side on the primary chain - clutch case) using a funnel. The two oils are different, The engine oil is 20-50 and the transmission uses sportstrans or the same trans oil as the bigtwins.

The reason is the 20-50 can use detergent oil and using detergent oil in the primary will wash all the friction material away and make the clutch slip.

How do you remove the back tire on a 1997 road king?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Raise the bike and remove the 5 lug nuts. if you can raise it high enough you can drop it straight down. If not remove the rear plastic panel and slide it out toward the rear. Many of us that have trailer hitches just loosen the lug nuts and the lay the bike down on it's right side on the grass or an old piece of carpet, then finish removing the nuts and just slide the wheel out. It will not hurt a thing to lay it down as it will simply rest on the gaurds.

How do you remove the seat on a road king classic?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If it is the Comfort Flex Seat, raise seat to it's highest level, place 2x4 under front nose of seat to protect seat from slipping and crushing your hand. Unbolt the two bolts that hold a clamp of metal around cross tube above battery and oil tank. Remove plate from under tube by sliding it's tabs out of slots. Now unbolt rear seat bolts from rear fender. Take care lifting seat assembly to avoid scratching rear fender, frame and fuel tanks from the floppy under seat assembly.

To remove the flywheel on a 1998 Fat Boy Harley, you will need a flywheel puller and some basic tools. Here's what to do:

  • Make sure the bike is in Neutral.
  • Disconnect the wires from the primary cover.
  • Remove the primary cover.
  • Remove the bolts holding the flywheel down.
  • Use the flywheel puller to remove the flywheel from the crankshaft.

Once the flywheel has been removed, you can now replace it with a new one. Make sure to use the same bolts to secure the flywheel to the crankshaft, and reconnect the wires to the primary cover.

'if you were the CEO of Harley-Davidson Motorcycles what would you do?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The first thing I would do is cut production immediately by at least 30% worldwide. The second thing I would do is make sure the dealers remain profitable so that they can withstand this economic downturn.I would increase dealer margins and go to work right away to secure retail financing at competitive rates for the next 3-4 years until this economy stabilizes. Thirdly I would do away with Buell motorcycle company and put MV Augusta back on the market and pray for a buyer.I would also make drastic staff cuts in the sales and marketing areas due to their ineffectiveness. These steps would just be a good start to get the company back to where it needs to be..
