Duckpin Bowling

A variation of bowling, duckpin bowling uses the same rules as ten-pin bowling. It uses pins that are shorter and lighter than their ten-pin equivalents, making it harder to achieve strikes.

Does the mass of your bowling ball make any difference in your bowling?

Yes. The weight of a ball is one of the most important factors to consider when buying/using a ball. If your ball is too heavy you won't have the speed you need to get the ball to the other end with enough momentum left over to crash through the pins, and also your swing is more likely to go all over the place.

Similarly, if your ball is too light, you will have too much speed and your ball will just bounce off the pins (especially if it's plastic) and not hit the full set of pins. Also, when your ball is too light you tend to swig your arm faster and become more reckless in terms of accuracy.

What is the highest score in duckpin bowling?

The highest possible score is the same as in tenpin bowling. A perfect game would consist of 12 consecutive strikes in the same game = 300 pins.

The highest actual score, however, is 279, bowled by Pete Signore Jr. of Connecticut on March 5, 1992. (The record for a woman is 265, set by Carol Gittings of Maryland on May 6, 1973.)

A strike is worth 10 points plus the number of pins you knock down with the next two deliveries. A strike that is followed by 2 more strikes is worth 30 points. A strike that is followed by a spare is worth 20 points. a strike that is followed by another strike and then 8 pins is worth 28 points. A strike that is followed by 4 pins and then 3 pins is worth 17 points.

How long is a bowling lane in duckpins?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It is exactly the same length as in tenpin bowling: 60 feet from the foul line to the center of the headpin.

It is also the same width, 41 inches; though the gutters which run alongside the lane are both narrower and shallower than in tenpins.

What are the different names for strikes?

Asked by Wiki User

The progression of strikes is as follows: On the left are standard names, on right are some odd names I have seen or heard through the years.

1 = Strike
2 = Double
3 = Turkey or Gobbler
4 = Hambone
5 = Recently heard referred to as yatzee or five bagger
6 = Sometimes referred to as a six pack or six bagger or wild turkey.
7 = Seven baggger
8 = Eight bagger
9 = Nine bagger or golden turkey
10 = Ten bagger
11 = Eleven bagger
12 = Twelve bagger or 300 game or Perfect Game

Anything after a strike may be referred to as a(n) "x bagger" (where x = number of consecutive strikes), 5 bagger or 7 bagger for example. They may also simply be referred to as "x in a row."

"Front x" - The number of consecutive strikes thrown starting with the first frame. For example, the front seven (strikes in frams 1-7).

"Back x" or "x out the door" - The number of consecutive strikes thrown through the tenth frame. For example, the back seven (stikes in frames 6-10).

Why do people call duckpin bowling 'duckpin'?

No one knows for sure; but the usual answer given is that an observer, upon seeing how much the smaller, lighter pins flew around after a strike, pointed out how they reminded him of how wild ducks scatter every which way at the sound of a shotgun blast.

There is one at UP Diliman Alumni Center. The wood lane is not smooth and you can see the ball jumping as it rolls down the lane. The pin setter is also done manually by the personnel there.
