There are 26 checkpoints on each route in the Iditarod. The southern route is taken on odd numbered years(such as this year,2013) and the northern route is taken on even numbered years. I'm not able to give the exact information of where each checkpoint is on both northern and southern routes, but somewhere else on wikianswers(this website).

But no one can MAKE a sled dog pull a sled and race. The dog has to want to do it. (It's like you can't push a string...)

Befriend Katy to five hearts and speak with her while she is at Brownie Ranch early in the day. You should get the cut scene where she challenges you to a Horse Race.

That will unlock the Horse Race mini game and you can play it as many times as you want by selecting "Mini Games" while at the title screen.

If you look on your calender at your house, it will show that on fall and spring, there will be a horse festival (the day you can race your horses) go to theadore at the town square and he will ask you what you want to do. go to "start the race" and he will ask you if you want to perticipate. In order to participate your horse will have to be close to that ranking level. If it says you cant participate keep doing the same thing. If its your 4th time doing that and it still says you cannot participate,then you must have not had leveled up your horse with 2 hearts.
