What is the importance of enzymes?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Enzymes break down proteins for use in the body, and they're to speed up the reaction of the product.

eg - photosynthesis enzymes are used to speed up the reaction to make it into glucose and oxygen.

Enzymes (pronounced /ˈɛnzaɪmz/) are proteins that catalyze (i.e., increase the ratesof) chemical reactions.[1][2] In enzymatic reactions, the molecules at the beginning of the process are called substrates, and they are converted into different molecules, called the products. Almost all processes in a biological cell need enzymes to occur at significant rates. Since enzymes are selective for their substrates and speed up only a few reactions from among many possibilities, the set of enzymes made in a cell determines which metabolic pathways occur in that cell.

What animal was affected by the use of DDT to point of becoming an endangered species?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The Bald Eagle, and other raptors such as the Peregrine Falcon, and Osprey populations were devastated by DDT. The long term exposure nearly wiped them out. Many other birds were affected as well, Robins in one instance were killed outright on a campus when the trees were sprayed to protect them from a disease. But the raptors suffered the worst exposure, the DDT stayed in the food chain creating a domino effect, so they ingested it in greater quantities. What class do Flounder belong to?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Flounders belong to the Actinoterygii class

The Actinopterygii (the plural form of Actinopterygius) constitute the class of the ray-finned fishes.

The ray-finned fishes are so called because they possess lepidotrichia or "fin rays", their fins being webs of skin supported by bony or horny spines ("rays"), as opposed to the fleshy, lobed fins that characterize the class Sarcopterygii which also, however, possess lepidotrichia.
