In 1978, Reinhold Messner reached the summit of Everest with Peter Habeler without using supplementary oxygen. This was the first time anyone had been that high without artificial breathing apparatus and Messner and Habeler proved what most doctors, specialists, and mountaineers thought impossible. It changed mountaineering forever. Messner repeated the feat, without Habeler, from the Tibetan side in 1980, during the monsoon season. This was Everest's first solo summit.

As Sir Edmund Hillary survived his successful attempt, he is credited with reaching the top of Mt. Everest first, but both George Mallory and Edmund Hillary used oxygen bottles.
There were two people called George Mallory and Andrew Irvine in 1924 but then they never came down and their bodies have never been found but on 29th May 1953 two people successfully did it; their names were Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay (who reached the top together).
