The earliest claim is for Much Wenlock in England in 1850; these were founded as the Wenlock Olympian Games and Baron de Coubertin recognised these as the first modern Olympics. Several other games were held in Greece in the 19th century, the first games organised in the current way as the First Olympian was held in Athens in 1896.
