The governing body of the Olympic Games. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is a permanent committee entrusted with the control and development of the modern Olympic Games. It is responsible for ensuring that the Olympic Games are celebrated in the spirit that inspired their revival in 1894. The IOC elects its own members. Each member speaks either French or English and lives in a country with a National Olympic Committee, approved by the IOC, to promote the Olympic movement and amateur sport in that country. In 1966, the IOC created a body, the International Olympic Committee Medical Commission, to combat doping. It is now divided into four subcommissions with responsibilities that include: combating doping; helping athletes to improve their performances without contravening basic principles; enabling athletes to avoid injury; and disseminating information, such as a code of ethics, to physicians treating athletes and to other interested people.
