1896 was the first time the United States participated in the Olympics, which was a Summer Olympics. The first Winter Olympics the U.S. participated in was in 1924.

The USA Olympic council has announced that it is thinking of bidding to host the 2024 or 2026 Olympics. The cities that might be host are Bozeman, Montana; Denver, Colorado; Reno - Lake Tahoe, Nevada; and Salt Lake City, Utah
Possibly in 2016. Chicago, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro, and Tokyo are the four finalists for the 2016 Olympics. We should know sometime next October.
The next possible olympics in the US will be in 2020, in either New York or Chicago. However these chances are very slim. The official possibilities for the 2020 olympics are in Italy, Spain, Japan, and Turkey. However, since no official possibilities for the 2022 olympics are stated, the US is a major potential. It is possible it may happen in Denver, Lake Tahoe/Reno area, or Salt Lake City.
