It really depends on a few things:

How long will you be camping? Overnight, a week etc?

Where/when will you be camping? You'll need a different setup if you're camping in the summer in the south versus in the winter up north.

What is your skill and comfort level? Do you prefer the newest camp gear, or are you more of a roughing it type? Is this your first camp out or do you do this regularly.

I'll list some of the basic things you can use in pretty much all of these situations, and you can customize your load out from there:

Shelter: Either a tent or a Tarp shelter will do. Tents work well if you are new to camping as they are easy to set up and transport. If you feel like roughing it, try camping with a tarp. Rig up a ridgeline and set up your tarp shelter with it. It takes some practice but is lighter and takes less space than a tent.

Food: Since hunting for your own food while camping is usually impractical and/or illegal, bring some good ole' canned and dried goods with you. Vienna sausages, spam, noodles, rice, hotdogs, fruit, and of course smores are all good options.

Sleeping Gear: A sleeping bag is good to have in the cold and the heat. Be sure you get a bag suited to you environment (a rated 40 degrees to 20 degrees bag should be good for most campers). Even in the heat a sleeping bag can offer extra padding between you and the ground. If the terrain is rocky or you just like the extra comfort, bring along a sleeping roll.

Clothing: I don't really have much to say here other than wear clothes that are comfortable for you and fit your location.

Knife: Always bring a good sturdy fixed blade knife with you when you venture Into the Woods. It's your most valuable camp tool after your brain.

Fire: Make sure it isn't illegal to forage for firewood where you are camping first. If it is, bring some wood to get a fire going. Be sure to take kindling, small sticks, and the larger logs. Also bring at least three ways to get a fire going (lighter, matches, firesteel etc).

First aid kit: Bring along a first aid kid. It should have bandages for cuts and scrapes, disinfectant, painkillers, and gauze at the least. It's probably a good idea to expand your kit to include things to deal with burns, allergic reactions etc.

Cell phone: Not essential, but a good idea to have in case you run into trouble.

You can bring more or less as you see fit, but always be sure to clean up after yourself. Leave your campsite cleaner than you found it so the next camper who comes along can enjoy their trip too.

The bare essentials to camping are the bare essentials to life: water, heat, food and shelter. Camping should be a fun way to explore nature, and doing it beyond the bare essentials makes it a more enjoyable outing.

Tent, tarp, stakes, sleeping bag, pillow, extra clothes, emergency trash bags, first aid kit, food and coolers, Duct Tape(it fixes everything), dining fly, fire starter/matches, flashlights, headlamps, rain ponchos. This will get you through the base camp part of your trip. If you are also doing some other activity, then bring whatever necessary gear for that.

What do you do when you are camping with cub scouts?

That depends on the Pack. Cub Scout camping is usually "car camping" which means you drive the car up to the camp site and do not need to pack light. You can bring camp stoves, foam or air cushions, coolers, tables and chairs etc. Most packs will have some activities planned as a pack and usually there are activities planned with the den (often working on badges). There may be some down time for the parent or scout so bringing some things to occupy your time would be wise. The activities available wil vary by site and may include trails to hike or bike, fishing, boating, swimming etc.
