There have been many lists made of the most expensive sports in the world, which differ depending on two factors:

  • what is considered a "sport", which can differ according to whether it is competitive or whether physical activity is involved
  • how comprehensive their surveys are or whether they are limited to the more popular sports

For this list, I have combined a 2004 list by Forbes and a more recent one by The Richest, exclusing activities that are not competitive in nature but recreational:

  1. Yacht racing - it requires some of the most expensive ocean-going vessels in the world
  2. Polo - requires expensive ponies, safety equipment and very high transportation costs
  3. Formula One Racing - extremely specialised and technologically advanced cars are needed
  4. Ballooning (Hot-Air Balloon Racing) - expensive and very specialised balloon and navigation equipment
  5. Vintage Auto Racing - expensive vehicles with very high parts and maintenance costs
  6. Modern Pentathlon - requires horses, Fencing, shooting and swimming equipment for one sport
  7. Dressage - "ballet on horses" and requires extremely specialised and perfectly-groomed animals
  8. Aerobatics - requires very special aircraft and much training as well
  9. Bobsleigh Racing (Bobsledding) - requires a team of four in the most specialised of all snow vehicles
  10. Ski Jumping - requires very specialised skis and has exceptionally high insurance costs because of the danger

There are also sports that are not expensive in equipment but can be in other ways which are not listed but which I might note. An example is sumo Wrestling, which requires extremely specialised training to get large enough; a very different one is (Australian rules) football, which requires exceptionally large areas of land for fields.
