The Baseball players are the outfielders (left fielder, center fielder, and right fielder), the 1st baseman, the 2nd baseman , the 3rd baseman, and the shortstop. The pitchers are 5-6 starting pitchers, 3-4 relievers, 1-2 specialist pitchers (like Brian Matsuz of the Baltimore Orioles), a set-up man, and a closer. There are also backup fielders. In the American League, there is a designated hitter, or a player whose job is to bat for the pitcher.

This doesn't have an exact number. The MLB has a limit on how many people can be on the team based on the part of the season. However, little league and high school allow as many as you want. There are only 9 that can be on the field. Their positions are labeled 1-9. Respectively, they are: pitcher, catcher, first base, second base, third base, shortstop, left field, center field, and right field.

There is no one answer, as different strategies in team make-up vary. The following is merely a generalization.

On the professional level, a team will consist of eight starting position players; A catcher, first baseman, second baseman, third baseman, shortstop, left fielder, center fielder and right fielder. It will also require ten to twelve pitchers; Five starting pitchers and five to seven relief pitchers. An American League team will also require a starting designated hitter, who takes the pitcher's spot in the batting order. Teams may also decide to use "platoon" players at various positions, where two players share a position based on their handedness, as right handed batters tend to hit left handed pitchers better and vice versa. This practice has fallen out of favor in today's game, but is still used occasionally.

The bench varies depending on the league, the strategy of the manager and the skill of the bench players. National League teams will typically have at least one solid right-handed batter and one solid left-handed batter to pinch hit for the pitchers and weaker hitters of the order. A team will need at least one reserve infielder and one reserve outfielder. Depending on the versatility of those players, they may need a second reserve. This is especially true in the infield where many reserves cannot play the very difficult shortstop position, and a second player may be required just to fill that one spot.

All in all, there are 25 player on a Major League roster. This extends to 40 after Sept 1st so teams can evaluate players at the end of the season.

On an Amateur or local roster, teams usually only require around fifteen players, as there are rarely more than two starting pitchers and significantly fewer relief pitchers and bench players needed.
