GPS can measure distance and time, using atomic clocks on satellites.
They can also use laser switches. When the car goes through a laser beam, it triggers a clock to start. When the car cuts through another laser beam a mile away, the clock stops.
As of 2021, the land speed record is 763.035 mph (1,227.986 km/h) set by the ThrustSSC in 1997. This record-breaking achievement occurred in the Black Rock Desert, Nevada.
