This depends on the discipline. Thoroughbred racehorses are backed, or taught to wear a saddle, as yearlings and raced as two-year-olds. Most people frown on this because it causes the horses to wear up and die young. Dressage, show jumping, eventing etc. requires more intensive training, and a seven or eight year old horse is only at the beginning of his career. (By this age a successful racehorse would have been retired from racing and used exclusively for breeding for several years). Haute ecole, or high school, horses must be trained for even longer. These 'performing horses' are not often competed with and are usually seen in public demonstrations of horsemanship. The most famous haute ecole establishment is the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, responsible for making Lipizanners famous. Difficult dressage manouvres such as the piaffe, capriole and levade take many years to teach to a horse, and haute ecole horses only start performing around age 13.
