Arthur Wint and George Rhoden of Jamaica won gold in the 400 meter dash. Wint won in 1948 and Rhoden in 1952. Wint won Jamaica's first ever Olympic gold medal. Deon Hemmings of Jamaica won gold in the women's 400 meter dash at the 1996 Games in Atlanta. She was the first Jamaican woman to win a gold medal at the Olympics. Trinidad and Tobago sent a team of five athletes to their first Olympics, the 1948 Games in London:

George Lewis, Manny Ramjohn, and Wilfred Tull competed in athletics, Compton Gonsalves competed in cycling, and Rodney Wilkes competed in Weightlifting.

Wilkes won a silver medal, Trinidad and Tobago's first ever Olympic medal, in the featherweight class.
