No, to my knowledge Dale Sr. never sat down in an open wheel racecar for any type of competitive race.

The Indy 500 also takes place on the same day as the Coca Cola 600 and there have been only a small number of people compete in both. (Tony Stewart, Robby Gordon, & John Andretti are the only ones I can think of)

AnswerHe had raced at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, in the "Brickyard 400" NASCAR race. But never in the "Indianapolis 500" Indy car race.
