It depends on what type of degree you are interested in pursuing. If you simply want a "sports medicine" certificate then it may take up to two years. An associates degree would take about the same amount of time. A bachelor's degree however requires completion of all required undergraduate classes (4 years). A master's degree would be completed 2 years after undergraduate school (6 years). A doctoral degree would be 2 years after completion of master's degree (8 years), yet keep in mind when pursuing a career on the doctoral level, it would have be accompanied by residency which is training in a particular medical category (orthopaedics, Physical Therapy, chiropractics, etc.) (between 2 and 6 years). In total, if you would like to obtain the highest educational degree in sports medicine it could easily take up to 14 years for you to be completely independent.

http://education-portal.com/articles/Sports_Medicine_Doctor:_Educational_Requirements.html A sports doctor is a fully qualified medical Doctor Who has chosen to focus on sports medicine. That means in order to become a sports doctor, you have to do the same requisite training any doctor has to go through before you can practice. You will need a bachelor's degree in science, if not a pre-med degree, followed by medical school and residency. The residency level is where sports doctors typically begin to distinguish themselves, but you can start honing your focus as early as pre-med with proper guidance and a clear understanding of what elective courses will best serve your career goals.

The amount of schooling can depend on what career one is looking to do with a degree in sports medicine. A personal trainer would need only a two-year associates degree. A physical therapist would require a four-year bachelor's degree with a masters from an accredited therapy program. Anything higher than that would six or more years of schooling.

The sports medicine Masters is generally 33 credit hours. There are schools that offer on campus programs and also through distance learning. While it is possible to complete the degree within one year, it depends on how the student takes the program, meaning full-time or part-time. Most individuals take a part-time credit load which means it could take anywhere from two to three years to complete. Still, that is entirely up to you. You can research these programs by going to www.collegeboard.com/splash/ and using their College MatchMaker search engine. You can request a list of schools offering Sports Medicine, and geographical location. The site will give you each institutions background, accreditation, programs of study, entrance requirements, tuition and fees etc. and a link to each institutions official web page.

A bachelor's degree in most areas can require between 124 to 128 college credits particular to a specific program of study. This would be based on a college or university that operates on a regular two semester academic year which is the most common. For institutions that operate on a tri-semester or quarter-semester it would be quite different. That being said, the Bachelor's degree - in most cases - is designed as a four year program of study, provided the student is full-time and follows their chosen program of study as prescribed by the college or university, and also provided the individual does not require prerequisite or developmental coursework. The minimum credit load for a full-time student is no less than 12 credits per semester. However, to complete the degree within the four years, a credit load of approximately 15 to 18 credits is recommended. For individuals who work or who have other responsibilities that would prohibit them from attending full-time, completion of the degree may take twice as long. Still, some of this time can be cut down by attending summer sessions and/or interim sessions. In addition, the bachelors and associate degrees are referred to as undergraduate degrees while the Masters and Doctorate degrees referred to as graduate degrees.
